The Human Sciences Research Council based in South Africa recently completed the Fifth National HIV and Health Survey (SABSSM V) which was previously undertaken in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012. This survey collected data from 22 000 randomly selected households across the country. The aim of the survey is to provide a comprehensive assessment of HIV prevalence and HIV incidence as well as other related socio-economic and behavioural factors that contribute to the spread of the virus. It aims to identify the prevalence of behavioural and social factors that put South Africans at risk of contracting the virus. These include alcohol and substance abuse, circumcision status, high-risk sexual behaviour and access to communication interventions . This study is crucially important to the country as it provides information that will be used for planning and programmes.
