Despite many previous interventions, long distance truck drivers (LDTDs) continue to be vectors of the HIV epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent studies in South Africa found LDTDs to have a HIV prevalence of 56%, while female sex workers (FSWs) to have a 90.6% HIV prevalence rate. Emerging frontier technologies such as blockchain, offer the potential to improve quality of care through protected and accessible medical records, protect human rights of PLHIV seeking HIV services, and through smart contracts, to improve the efficiency and targeting of donor funding. The session will help explain blockchain and how it can be harnessed to improve programming to and enhance HIV service delivery and quality care for LDTDs, FSWs, and all PLHIV. Participants will learn from panellists’ experiences developing cross-sector partnerships, piloting blockchain solutions, identifying new opportunities to scale programming as well as risks and challenges.
